On April 7th, 2003 at approximately 1:13am. Constable Staley was dispatched to an Attempt Suicide call, in Newmarket. The caller stated that the male party involved was cutting his wrists. Constable Stale arrived on location at 1:20am and at this time was advised that the male attempting suicide was in the living room of his residence, she was also advised that the male still had the knife in his possession.
Constable Staley directed this party to return to the front door of the residence and awaited the other officers responding. In the meantime Constable Staley was able to place a large coffee table between her and the male party with the knife and she began to talk to him attempting to get him to put the knife down. While she was doing this, she observed the male begin to cut his writs with this knife. The male advised her that he wanted to die and that he was taking medication for depression. Constable Staley continued to speak to this male and was able to convince him to put the knife down before he did any further injury.
The male party was subsequently apprehended and cared for by paramedics on scene.
Constable Staley showed a great deal or courage in confronting this armed male on her own prior to the arrival of other officers and her quick thinking in successfully convincing him to put the knife down without causing any further harm to himself or others.
