On February 3, 2002 this Hamilton officer was flagged down by a female who had been chased from her residence by her estranged common-law partner. She was frantic, as her child was still in the house and she feared for her child's safety. The officer entered the home in search of the child. She heard noises coming from the basement and went to investigate. The officer was confronted by the estranged common-law partner and assaulted. He broke away from the officer and ran up the stairs. The officer caught him in the hallway and was again assaulted, being choked by the suspect. At this point, the complainint had come back into the house and was able to give assistance. The accused then fled the residence but was apprehended with the assistance of the K-9 unit, in a shed several blocks away. Again he resisted arrest.
The nominated officer placed her own safety in jeopardy, in order to assist a child in a potentially dangerous situation. Despite personal injury this officer continued the pursue the male suspect and assist in his apprehension.
